The RoHS Certification Challenge
Regulatory authorities are now stepped-up with new ways to reduce the environmental impact and potential hazard of wastes from electrical and electronic equipment. The European Union directive 2002/95/EC on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) holds electrical and electronic equipment companies directly responsible for the chemical compliance of their products. This means all electrical and electronic equipments (EEE) have to conform to strict standards, extensive compliance documentation and ensure that EEEs sold in the EU don't contain more than 0.1/0.01% of Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Mercury (Hg), hexavalent chromium (Cr+6), polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs).
There are two main areas of RoHS compliance risk:
- Product material risk: During selection of materials and components for the product and use of indirect materials in the process of manufacturing..
- Supplier risk: From product variation, engineering or manufacturing changes, multiple suppliers and contamination through the supply chain.
Manufacturers will need to ensure that their electrical & electronic products, parts and components comply in order to be distributed and sold in all over the world. If companies work with a good framework and valid strategies, they could reduce the total costs to meet EU compliance.

- Surveillance, process consists of, Factory Inspection including Quality Management system audit and product review with respect to restricted substances control. Spectro conducts annual follow-up inspections, which may include sampling to confirm compliance.
- Listing in Spectro's inclusive database is available for products that meet or exceed Spectro RoHS Product Certification.
- Program participants may use the Spectro RoHS Product Certification Mark for products approved and may appear on the product, on the packaging of the product, and on the participant's web site & print literature.
RoHS List for Restricted Substances Database
Those products that have been found to meet the requirements of the program are included in RoHS Complies List for Restricted Substances, a database that is open for all who chooses to create an account.
